Luz Beach

The village of Luz, popularly known as Praia da Luz and as a fishing village, its name originates from the Igreja da Nossa Senhora da Luz (Church of Our Lady of Light), which was severely affected by the 1755 earthquake and rebuilt by the inhabitants.

Ancient cultural roots are expressed by the archaeological vestiges of several people who have settled in the area since the Paleolithic and later on the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and Arabs. The history of the village dates back to Roman times, where it finds its presence in the Roman Ruins, discovered in the nineteenth century. They show a thermal spa and a complex consisting of tanks for salting fish, a monument classified as Property of Public Interest.
